Robert Schanz
2004, Industry
At Domi Racer-Accessory Mart, Bob Schanz's method of business was
providing fast, efficient service to clientele around the world.
In the 1970's, Bob turned to IBM for assistance in developing a system
where one could take an OEM part number and convert it to his inventory
numbers, thus making it possible for people to order their parts
from him. Almost instantly a customer would have a confirmation of
availability from Bob.
Utilizing computers long before most of the motorcycle manufacturers, Bob's
system became an industry standard.
Bob also created a catalog that was relished by the masses. It had pages of vintage
motorcycles for sale, and was very educational. He often reproduced Amal catalogs
as well as Smiths Application Charts for his readers. The overall effect was like
having an old motorcycle shop sitting in your mailbox.
Being the great listener that he was, Bob always looked for the parts and accessories
that his customers wanted. When the antique parts could not be found, he teamed up
with companies in the US, Japan, Taiwan, India and China to recreate them. Almost
500 different parts for antique motorcycles came from these ventures.
Aggressively buying out motorcycle dealerships and distributors, his mottos was
to buy overseas when the dollar was strong, and sell overseas when the dollar was
weak.
After accumulating facades of old stores in England, Bob built a truly unique
show room in the late '80s. These facades made a great background for the typical
British fare he offered. It was Bob who helped keep a lot of vintage British and
European bikes on the road as companies began to close down.
The motorcycle world lost a great friend and innovator on June 1, 2003.
