Jay R. "Springer" Springsteen
2003, Competition
Still a major cometitor and one of the most repected racers on the
AMA Grand National circuit, Dirt Track Hall of Famer, Jay R.
"Sringer" Springsteen has battled a major illness to continue
racing.
A Michigan native, Jay has raced in nearly every class in dirt track
and road competition in his successful 28-year career. He turned
pro at the young age of 16 and has been burning up the track ever
since. Jay's number 9 has crossed the finish line as Grand National
Chapion in 1976-1978, second in 1979 and 1982 and third in 1983. He
still ranks in the top ten Grand National Chapions, despite having
a mysterious stomach illness that has plagued much of his career.
The first active racer to be inducted into the Dirt Track Hall of
Fame and named the AMA Professional Sportsman of the Year in 1995,
"Springer" set the all-time National record at 40 wins. His winning
career continues today. In 2000, he was named Dirt Track Rider of the
Century by Cycle News.
If it was his flamboyance and his confidence that first endeared him
to fans, he may be best remembered for his tenacity in the face of
adversity. He has never allowed illness to sideline him for long.
Discussing a 2002 race, Jay commented, "...you have to get off the
line with the leaders and keep it on the rubber." Perhaps it is that
philosophy that has allowed Jay to endure and to earn the lasting
respect of peers and fans alike.
Jay R. "Springer" Springsteen resides with his wife, Judy and
daughter, Amanda, in Lapeer, Michigan.
