Becky Brown
2002, Leadership
How many women have had a Sportster sitting in their kitchen? Becky
Brown did, according to one friend. Oh... and a 600-pound pet pig
named "Pork Chop"...
Even though women have been astride motorcycles from the very
beginning, Becky found herself journeying alone on the Ohio highways
in the mid-'70's - and was definitely considered an oddity. Becky
placed an ad in her local Ohio newspaper in 1979, hoping to find
ANY other women riders in her area. Little did she know then that the
ten women who first reponded to her ad would form the nucleus of an
organization - WOMEN IN THE WIND - that recently celebrated its 22nd
anniversary and now has 46 chapters around the world.
Through W.I.T.W.'s founder, Becky has refused the position of
International President. She created Women in the Wind to promote a
positive image, educate and unite women motorcyclists, not for her
own personal vanity. Instead Becky serves as the international
secretary and treasurer and spokesperson, deflection the limelight
towards W.I.T.W.'s successes on a national level; they raised enough
money through the Pony Express run for the Susan G. Komen Breast
Cancer Research Foundation to be a main contributor to the support
vehicle.
Becky has been featured in the film documentary, "She Lives to Ride,"
by Alice Stone, and in the book, "Hear Me Roar: Women, Motorcycles,
and the Rapture of the Road," by Ann Ferrar - and rightly so. Becky
Brown has inspired confidence and unity in women motorcyclists the
world over by living her passion for the road.
